Four Generations of Building a Solid Reputation

If you see the name Ed on the Dropps family tree, chances are he had his hands in building. Bud (Ed) Dropps is owner and president of Accent Homes, but as the saying goes, “this acorn didn’t fall far from the tree.”

Bud’s great-grandfather was a builder-carpenter. In fact, Bud proudly displays a framed photo in his office of Great-grandfather, standing on the deck of a house with a big saw in his hand.

Ed Jr. (Bud’s dad) also built homes as White Oak and Pine Tree Builders. Eventually he got into developing land under the name Cypress Development, which he still maintains today.

From ages 13 – 15 years old, Bud worked for his dad, cleaning up houses and shoveling dirt. “I was pretty sure I didn’t want to do this for the rest of my life,” says Bud as he began reminiscing. “Then when I was 15, he put me on a framing crew, and I knew for SURE I didn’t want to be a builder.” But he kept on and learned the trade from an early age.

By the age of 20, Bud had a dozen carpenters working from him, and after a few years he broke into general contracting and then building full time. In those days, he built during the week and sat in models every weekend, working seven days a week for a long time.

Today, with sons Ed and Jim and Design Consultant, Jim Kuiken, Bud Dropps is still very involved in the building process. Whether he’s meeting with clients or inspecting the jobsite, his personal interaction is key to exceeding the needs of all of Accent’s homebuyers.

Taking a fresh approach to home design, Jim Kuiken has become a vital conduit between builder and client in expressing just how they want to live in their homes.  Hallmarks of a Kuiken design include a sophistication of line, material and functional space that radiates a new simplicity and warmth, and a home that resonates within the landscape.  Jim Kuiken Design offers design solutions and creative space planning for new home construction in both interior and exterior elements, product material selection, and interior design.

Since joining Accent Homes, the company has received 21 acclaimed industry awards for home designs that Jim Kuiken has created as a lead design consultant.  Kuiken’s signature style has been featured in magazines such as Mpls. St. Paul and Midwest Home, the Star Tribune, and has been covered in Twin Cities local news features.  His and Accent Homes’ work is also showcased in a recently released book of design and lush photographs, Perspectives on Design.
